The Carthouse

Our screenings are shown in our purpose built cinema ‘The Carthouse’ in Oxen Park.

The cinema accommodates around 35 people in comfort and is furnished with carpets, armchairs and sofas to provide a warm, relaxing and sociable atmosphere.

We also have some ‘real’ cinema seats from Charles Morris, owner of the Roxy in Ulverston, so although it has the ‘living room’ feel, it also has a real cinema look.

Come and see for yourself!

A Brief History

Oxen Park Cinema Club started out with mobile equipment and screened films in local village halls.

However, it was always founder member Carol McNeill’s aim to find a permanent home for Oxen Park Cinema Club and after a huge fund raising effort over 12 years The Carthouse finally opened as a community cinema in November 2014.

Further efforts helped complete the work with a new screen and state of the art technical equipment in April 2015 to bring a unique big screen experience to our local, rural community.

The Carthouse was originally an old Oxen Park village barn and brewery carthouse.

Funding

The rebuilding of The Carthouse was made possible through generous grants from a local business, LDNP, Frieda Scott Trust, Hadfield Trust, The Neighbourhood Forum, Cumbria Community Foundation, Rawden-Smith Trust, The Co-operative Community Fund, Howdens Building Supplies, BFI and by no means least the BIG Lottery Awards For All fund.

We are forever grateful for their support.
